The 6502, an 8-bit microprocessor, revolutionized computing by drastically reducing the cost of microcomputers to about 1/6th the price of processors available at that time. It played a pivotal role in the personal computer revolution of the 1980s and was a key component in numerous PCs and gaming consoles such as the Atari 2600, Apple II, NES, Commodore 64, Atari Lynx, and several others.
My fascination with understanding the inner workings and construction of computers led me to discover Ben Eater’s educational content on YouTube by chance. His approach to building a small computer on a breadboard resonated with me, prompting me to purchase the kit he offers on his website, complete with all the necessary parts, including the 6502 microprocessor.
Embarking on this journey with the 6502 and following Ben Eater’s guidance, I spent several weeks assembling various modules and constructing the computer from scratch. Now, I possess a microcomputer that I can program using assembly language. At its current stage, the computer is capable of executing simple mathematical operations. However, my aspiration is to eventually develop a game or a more practical application for it in the future.
